Freshwater cultured pearls are made from a substance called nacre. Nacre is a natural secretion produced by mollusks as a response to irritation or an irritant (such as a small bead or piece of tissue) being introduced into their shells. Over time, layers of nacre build up around the irritant, forming a pearl. The composition of nacre consists primarily of calcium carbonate (around 85%) and conchiolin (a protein that binds the calcium carbonate particles together). The combination of these substances gives the pearl its lustrous, shiny surface.

CARE FOR FRESHWATER PEARL JEWELLERY::

a) Remove before vigorous exercising/sleeping to prevent breakage of the delicate parts.

b) Remove the pearl necklace before bathing & swimming to prevent the chemicals in the water.

c) Keep pearl necklaces away from flames to prevent the breakage of the string.

d) Avoid direct contact of pearls with perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, sanitizers, household cleaning products, vinegar, bleach, ammonia & direct heat.

e) Keep away from sharp and rough surfaces.

f) Wipe your pearl jewellery with a soft cloth to clean. You can also use a little olive oil to polish your pearls for lustre.

g) Store pearls individually in a soft cloth pouch.

h) Do not hang pearl necklaces on a rack to prevent the string from stretching.

j) If the endings of the pearl necklace are made from brass, then keep it away from water, perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, sanitizers, household cleaning products, vinegar, bleach, ammonia & direct heat.
